Daniel Wohl's Corps Exquis feat. TRANSIT
Praised as one of his generation’s “imaginative and skillful creators” (the New York Times), electroacoustic composer/performer Daniel Wohl’s Corps Exquis–a large-scale performance piece that exists at the intersection of video installation, rock concert, avant-garde cinema, and experimental classical and electronic music-was released in June, 2013 on New Amsterdam Records. Wohl developed the project in conjunction with TRANSIT New Music and a collective of New York City video artists, combining the vitality of the city’s emerging experimental music and video art scenes. It was created in the fashion of the parlor game exquisite corpse, developed by the Surrealists in 1920′s Paris, in which each player is assigned a section of an artwork, but only allowed a glimpse of the very end of the previous player’s contribution so no one sees the final piece until all individual sections are completed. Performers on the album include the acclaimed new music quintet TRANSIT, and guest performances by Aaron Roche, Julia Holter and So Percussion.
The album was widely praised, being called "beautiful and maze-like" by Pitchfork, a "boldy surreal aural experience" by the New York Times, and an "exquisite sound world" by NPR. Additionally, it was named #1 Release of 2013 by WNYC’s New Sounds Listeners’ Poll, included in Rhapsody's Top 25 Classical Albums of 2013, and the track "Corpus" was named one of NPR Music’s 100 Favorite Songs of 2013.
